Course Overview

Course Description

Supercharge Power BI Online is a structured, online training course that will help you learn to write DAX, the data modeling language of Power BI. It is created and delivered by world-renowned DAX expert, author of the best selling book Supercharge Power BI and trainer, Matt Allington. The DAX skills learnt are completely transferrable to Excel Power Pivot.

Supercharge Power BI Online training is a combination of

  • Self-paced remote learning using either of Matt’s books, Supercharge Power BI or Supercharge Excel
  • Video-based training with examples and demos to support the complex DAX topics
  • Weekly live online Q&A sessions with the instructor, Matt Allington.

The structured part of the training and learning is delivered in a semester spanning a total of 7 weeks. Each week consists of:

  • Weekly assigned reading from either the Supercharge Power BI or Supercharge Excel. (A free digital copy of both books is included in your registration.)
  • Completion of the exercises that correspond to the weekly readings – this gives you hands-on experience to cement your learning.
  • Online videos available to review and summarize the key points and topics for the week.
  • Weekly live online 1-hour Q&A sessions(5 sessions) with Matt Allington to answer any of your questions or solve any of your business problems.

Total hours: 21 hours reading + 5 hours video + 5  hours live Q&A = 31 hours

DAX Books

You can choose any of the 2 books Supercharge Power BI or Supercharge Excel for your learning based on the tool you work. DAX skills are transferable between Power BI Desktop and Excel Power Pivot with the difference being UI. Power BI Desktop is more advanced than Excel in that it might include new DAX functions before Excel. But the DAX concepts remain the same.

It is recommended you do the reading and exercises first and then use the videos to cement your learning. You can then prepare any questions you have prior to the Q&A session. You can email your questions to Matt Allington along with any workbooks used and Matt would take up those questions during the Q&A sessions.

One of the benefits of this style of learning is you get to listen to all the discussion and questions from all the other participants. The Q&A sessions are recorded, and the recordings are shared with you after each session (even if you can’t attend on any given week). You can download the recordings of the live Q&A sessions and keep them for later reference.

Supercharge Power BI Online is built on an annual subscription format. Your registration comes with 12 months of access to the course materials, so you can refer back to the videos whenever you like. Even after the 7-week semester is complete, you will continue to have access to all of the course materials, the online support forum, and future semester Q&A sessions. Read more about this in the Frequently Asked Questions section below.

Who this course is for?

  • Anyone who wants to learn to write DAX using Power BI (or Power Pivot for Excel).
  • Those who prefer the structure of guided learning vs. reading a book on their own.

Next Semester Timings

There are 2 live Q&A sessions that run concurrently during each semester (Group 1 and Group 2), designed to cater for most time zones around the world. The session timings for the upcoming semester based on certain time zones are given below. If your time zone is not shown below, please base all time zone conversions based on the time in Sydney, Australia (AEST). Once you register, you will be sent invitation for the Group sessions of your choice.

Be sure to specify which Group you’d prefer (Group 1 or Group 2) in the Order Notes at checkout.

Before the Q&A session, you can email your questions to Matt@Exceleratorbi.com.au, along with any workbooks you’ve used, and Matt Allington will answer them during the session. The Q&A sessions are recorded, and the video recordings are shared with you after each session (even if you can’t attend on any given week). You can download the recordings of the online live Q&A sessions and keep them for later reference.

FAQ

I’m a beginner, is this course suitable to me?
Yes, this is a beginner’s course and doesn’t require any programming knowledge or prior DAX experience. Anyone that is competent in using Excel will learn what they need to know from this course.
Why is this course a subscription?
One of the key features of this course is that you get access to the private support forum and can attend the live Q&A sessions hosted by Matt Allington. Subscribers of this course can attend any of the live Q&A sessions for any semester during their subscription year. At the end of the first 12 months you can continue to subscribe and keep these benefits, or you can cancel your subscription and end your participation at that time. You will receive an email about 4 weeks before your subscription is renewed so that you can choose to opt out if you want to.
Will I get videos of the Q&A sessions?
Yes, you will. Each Q&A session is recorded and the link to download the video will be sent to those registered for that semester. You will need to download a copy of the video file and store it locally, as the recordings will not be permanently stored online.
If I can’t attend a Q&A one week, can I still ask questions?
Yes, you can. You can email Matt in advance and/or ask your questions in the forum. Matt will answer the specific Q&A questions, as well as good questions from the forum, during the live Q&A calls each week and you can watch the answers on the video in your own time.
When will the next semester (after this one) start?
There are typically 5-6 semesters each year for this course. The dates for the next semester are typically set and advertised mid-way through the currently running semester. Typically the new semester will start a couple of weeks after the end of the previous semester, but it can vary +/- a week or so. The tentative start dates for the upcoming semesters are given above.
If I get distracted, can I come back and do it later?
Definitely. This is a semester-based course, but your subscription gives you access to attend any of the semesters that run during your subscription. You will still need to register for the semesters you want to attend, but if you get distracted and “life happens” during the semester, simply contact us and book in again for a future semester during your subscription period.
The semester has started, is it too late for me to join?
It depends. The kick-off session (week 0) is the official start of the semester. Typically you can join the current semester (for the first time) anytime prior to the week 2 Q&A. There is an extra study week during weeks 3&4 which will allow you to catch up. After that, it will be difficult and we recommend that you wait for the next semester.
I am too late for the current semester, can I join anyway and get started myself?
Yes, you are free to join at any time. You can start the reading and watching the weekly review videos online. Then when the new semester starts, you can then join the live Q&A sessions and you will be ahead of the game.
How do I access the course materials? Are they downloadable?
The pre-recorded videos are streamed on-demand and may be watched as often as you like. However, they are not downloadable. The example files and handouts for each lesson are downloadable.
Where are the pre-recorded course videos hosted?
All the videos for the course are hosted on Vimeo. Please note that some networks block access to Vimeo, in which case the videos will not be watchable. You may want to double-check that your network allows access to Vimeo before registering in the Academy, to ensure that you will be able to see the videos.
How do I receive my Certificate of Completion?
After all the modules and lessons have been completed, you will be able to download the Certificate of Completion from the My Courses area of your Account Dashboard.
Aside from the Q&A sessions, what support is included with the course? How do I ask questions?
All users with a current course subscription receive access to our private Discussion Forum, where they can ask questions related to the course materials, as well as how to apply those teachings to their own work. This forum is also intended to act as a place for students to practice their own learnings by helping others with those questions. While the focus of this forum is primarily aimed at allowing students to learn by helping each other, they are monitored by our course authors as well. For technical issues related to the site, course access, or other questions regarding your account, please get in touch through our Contact Us page.
How do I renew my subscription?
Our system will automatically renew your subscription for another year on your expiry date using the billing information on file. About a month (4 weeks) before your current expiry date, you will receive an email from us reminding you that the renewal is coming up and to confirm your billing details, so your access is uninterrupted.

This course is just brilliant! It really does what’s stated in the title: it will supercharge YOU when using DAX!

The samples and all the materials used are very relevant and helpful in learning the concepts and besides this, Matt’s style of explaining the concepts really helped me understand how to write effective DAX formulas and take advantage of this amazing tool Power BI and also Power Pivot in Excel.

I really loved the way the course is structured, with self-study plus online videos during the week and a weekly Q&A session where Matt answered all our questions and provided additional samples and explanations on that week’s topics.

I highly recommend it to all Excel Power Users and Power BI Users! This course will really make you understand DAX and show how can you leverage it in finding insights and uncover hidden patterns in your data.

I have followed this course conducted by Matt Allignton previously and it really gave me a good start to work with PowerBi. As I was coming from Tableau environment, it was vital to understand how PowerBi works and its architecture, data modelling etc.

Then I started joining Query sessions of follow-up trainings. I love it. It really helped me to refresh my learnings, and allowed me to discuss my day to day PowerBI issues and find some practical solutions. It also helped me to listen to others’ Use Cases and learn from them.

I have already registered & continue with ‘Power Query & DAX training’ online sessions.
THANKs for great learning support provided and will continue to join Query sessions in the future too.
    Cheers, Roy Dias
