PLEASE NOTE:
This course and its companion course, Extracting Data Insights with Power BI and DAX, have been superseded by Power BI for the Business Analyst Online.
This new course includes all of the videos and materials in both Foundations of Power BI and Extracting Data Insights, but also contains an expanded section on Power Query and includes bi-weekly live, online Q&A sessions for direct help with your questions. Plus, any new or updated content will only be available in this new course.
We highly recommend enrolling in Power BI for the Business Analyst Online instead of this course.
Course Description
This training course was developed by Matt Allington, a Microsoft MVP (Power BI) and author of the best-selling book Supercharge Power BI.
Microsoft Power BI is a self service Business Intelligence tool used for creating, publishing, and sharing reports. You can also create dashboards that will enable your organization’s decision-makers to easily navigate across all datasets to gain real business insights from a one-stop-shop.
In this course you will learn everything you need to know to start using the Power BI family of tools without having to be a programmer. The course is for beginners; it doesn’t require any programming or reporting experience and starts with a dataset that has already been prepared for you. (There is no coverage of data modeling in this course, as this is discussed in Matt’s companion course, Extracting Insights with Power BI and DAX.)
As we begin exploring Power BI, you’ll quickly see what makes it such an amazing tool to work with. After an overview of exactly what Power BI is and what it can do, as well as the components that make up self-service business intelligence, you will get some hands-on practical experience by building your very first report using Power BI Desktop. We’ll show you how to define a layout, how to add elements such as logos, titles, and create visuals such as Maps, Column Charts, Bar Charts, Line Charts, Slicers, and Cards.
You will also learn about the default cross-filtering, how to set it the way you want, and what difference is between Slicer filtering and cross-filtering. We’ll show you how to develop a customized theme, and how to use Bookmarks in your report to create various views of the report and view them later like a PowerPoint presentation. You will then apply some of these techniques when building several other types of reports along with Matt.
One of the other powerful features of Power BI is the ability to publish and share reports via a browser and mobile devices. While working with PowerBI.com, you will learn how to create dashboards and use some of the other amazing built-in tools such as Quick Insights and Analyze in Excel to help you leverage your reporting assets.
