Course Description

Demystifying DAX Online is a structured training course that will help you enhance your data modeling and DAX skills using Power BI. (The skills also apply to Power Pivot and SSAS Tabular.) It’s one thing to know how to write a DAX formula. It’s a completely different level of competency to understand how to write the correct formula and understand why it works. This course addresses this, so you understand what is happening under the hood.

This advanced course is created and delivered by world-renowned DAX expert, trainer, and author of the best-selling book Supercharge Power BI, Matt Allington. It is a combination of:

  • Video-based training content with examples, demos and practice exercises that will teach you the more complex DAX topics.
  • Live online Q&A calls with the instructor, Matt Allington.

Demystifying DAX Online is delivered in a semester consisting of 4 sessions (approximately 3 hour each), typically over 2 consecutive weeks. Each of the 4 sessions consists of:

  • Viewing the online videos to learn the content for the session. This can be done few days before the live Q&A call or the day before the call or on the same day of the call, depending on your time zone and your preferred time for learning.
  • Completing any practice exercises for the session (typically less than 30 mins). Doing this gives you hands-on experience to cement your learning.
  • Attending the 45 min live Q&A call with Matt Allington to discuss the session content and ask any questions. In each call, all participants will focus on the same content that is allocated to the session. See below for the topics covered in each session.

Total hours: 13.5 hours including video, practice, and live Q&A calls.

Who this course is for?

  • Anyone with a base understanding in writing DAX and who has a minimum of 6 months’ practical experience.
  • Those who are looking to build their skills for career advancement using Power BI as their tool of choice.
  • Those who prefer the structure of guided learning to help steer them along a learning path.
  • Anyone that intuitively realises that they actually don’t understand how to get the result they need from DAX.

Sessions and Topics

Course Semesters

There will be typically 4 to 5 semesters scheduled in a year.

Each semester is scheduled over three weeks:

  • One Onboarding Week
  • Two Semester Weeks

Onboarding Week

Onboarding week commences one full week prior to the first Q&A call. During Onboarding Week, you will need to:
  • View the onboarding video to understand the course structure in detail and how to complete the learning.
  • View the Introduction video.
  • View the DAX Basics video as a quick refresher. You should also brush up on these skills too, if needed.
  • Update your diary to lock in the time when you will do the work for each session during the semester week.

Semester Weeks

Within the time window you have set for yourself to work on each session, you will need to:

  • View the videos of the session as given in the Sessions and Topics section above.
  • Complete the practice exercises, if any.
  • Complete the homework exercises, if any.
  • Prepare your questions for the Q&A call related to the session.

You will then attend the live online Q&A call of the session at the scheduled time.

Live Online Q&A Calls

The live online Q&A calls will be held twice a week in Week 1 and Week 2 at 7:00 AM (local time in Sydney, Australia). You will be sent the meeting invite for the calls 2 weeks prior to the start of the next semester.

There is often some structured homework for each session that you may complete at your own pace, based on your schedule and time preferences. We recommend that you complete this work before the call and we can discuss your solution together. If you cannot complete the homework, you can still attend the call to listen to the discussions and ask any questions.

The call times for the upcoming semester are given below based on various time zones. If your time zone is not shown below, please convert to your time zone based on the time in Sydney, Australia (AEST).

Note: Please be aware of the multiple time differences due to the beginning and ending of Daylight Savings Time around the world.

Student Guide (PDF format)

  1. A consolidation of the hands-on and homework exercises given in each of the lessons. You can use this to easily keep track of the practice exercises for each session.
  2. A list of topics covered in each of the videos with timestamps. You can now easily search this PDF list for a specific topic that you are looking for, to quickly locate which video covers that topic.

You can use this list of topics in conjunction with the Chapters feature that is available in each lesson video (see below for more details).

Edited Subtitles in English for all Lesson Videos

English captions/subtitles are provided for all the videos in the course. The editing has been done by our Power BI team and are not auto-generated, so we think you may find them useful.

Captions may be turned on for an individual lesson by clicking on the CC icon in the right corner of the video control bar (located at the bottom of the lesson player) and selecting “English”.

Next to the CC icon you can find the transcript icon, and clicking it displays the transcript next to the video.

Chapters and Timestamps in all Lesson Videos

Chapters (i.e. topics covered in the video) and timestamps are provided for all the videos in the course.

The Chapters icon is found next to the Settings icon. When you click it, a list of chapters is displayed. You can click on any of the chapters and video starts playing at the timestamp for the topic.

This feature is useful for later reference when you want to review any specific topic. It can be used in conjunction with the Student Guide provided (see above), wherein all the topics covered are listed by lesson.

How to Get the Maximum Benefit from the Course

It is recommended you view the videos, repeat the demos/practice exercises if you need to, and then complete any homework exercises prior to attending the live Q&A calls.

One of the benefits of this style of learning is you can consume the content at your own pace (faster, slower, repeat over) and still get to listen to all the discussion and questions from all the other participants during the live calls.

The Q&A calls will be recorded, and the recordings will be shared with you after each call. You can download the videos and keep them for your later reference.

Note on Subscription Format

Demystifying DAX Online is an annual subscription course.

Your registration includes the first 12 months of unlimited access to the video content, the sample materials, the live online Q&A calls with Matt Allington, and our premium Discussions Forum while your subscription is active.

You can attend any future semester Q&A calls as long as your course subscription is active. Plus, you will receive the video recordings of the Q&A calls even if you cannot make it to a Q&A call.

You can cancel the renewal at any time. Read more about this in the Frequently Asked Questions section below.

Excellent instruction by Matt. He's really easy to follow, and has a very good methodology to learning the Demystifying DAX course. DAX Studio looks to be a very good tool to enable 'visualizing' a virtual table, as I've found one of the most difficult things to do is 'picture' what the resultant table of records looks like, after applying a DAX formula within a visual. Matt is an excellent instructor, as his approach to teaching asks us to thoroughly understand and breakdown a problem we're trying to solve with data modeling.

I think Matt is just really good at breaking down concepts in an easy-to-follow way. He always has good examples and insights and really walks you through complicated stuff, but you are not lost. I thought it was fantastic, especially how he included DAX Studio in the mix.

I liked the examples and iterations of how to solve problems in different ways. Also, it was really beneficial to have a deep focus that is limited to the core functions.

Even though the concepts can be challenging to understand, Matt gets them across, “Eating the elephant one bite at a time” through explanations, comparisons, and demonstrations. Some of the videos are long and the subject matter can be quite complex. Breaking some of these down into smaller bites would be nice. Thanks for your hard work in putting this together.

This is THE Course one should take if not a complete beginner anymore. I really liked the structure of the course and how it started, revisiting DAX Basics, and then, moving through different topics so that one can get a better understanding on how and why DAX works as it does. Matt’s teaching experience is fantastic and a lot of the concepts you’ve heard about (or not yet) are detailed in the course in a manner that ANYONE can understand them clearly and leverage them in the day-to-day work with Power BI. I totally recommend the course to anyone with some DAX experience.

I liked that the course was spread out over a couple of weeks, allowing time to absorb the information. I liked that Matt provided Q&A session and homework activities to complete between sessions. I also liked that the course was somewhat self paced. More interactive learning and longer Q&A sessions with more of a lecture/activity style to walk through problems with Matt may have helped a bit with the learning process.

I love that Matt doesn't just "give" the solution but takes the time to show how to think through the problem and arrive at a solution. I also like that I can retake within the next year as a family emergency prevented me from working through the course the way I would have liked. Great job! Thank you! I've BEGGED my business unit to take this training.

I liked the simplicity with which Matt discussed the concepts and also showing how not to do the calculations. This was really worth it. I have been using Power BI for over 5 years and self-taught. This was my first structured course on anything related to Power BI. The pace, the content, and the approach really worked for me.

Could not speak more highly of Matt or the course. Exceptional and practical content and with a clear pathway from building strong foundation knowledge and leveraging that knowledge into a powerful understanding of DAX & the data model. The level of knowledge I gained on the critical parts of the DAX and context was exactly what I was after. Can’t wait for the next semester to continue to build on what I have learnt.

This course is great if you have had a bit of experience in DAX but are still struggling with some concepts or trying to figure out why the numbers you are getting in a matrix don't look right. It really helped me better understand row context, filter context, and the difference between SUM and SUMX. There are also great tips on writing more efficient DAX code and troubleshooting Measures that are taking a long time to process. Highly recommend this course if you've been writing DAX for about 6-12 months already.

I'm so glad I took this course. There is so much free content on Power BI but this course actually delivers on its promises in a clear and concise way. It is worth every penny. Matt has great knowledge and experience but it is his skill as a trainer that makes this course stand out. Difficult concepts are explained and demonstrated in a way that shows an understanding of the common problems encountered by so many Power BI users. I'm actually looking forward to writing some DAX today!

Matt takes you on the journey with the easy to follow method of teaching he seems to have. I love the online format followed by the Q&A sessions as you can make sure you fit this blocks of learnings around your schedule. Pause, go back and to then have 12 months to revisit again after more practice. I'm addicted to Power BI learning thanks to these courses.

Of all the Online courses I've done this is by far THE best!! Matt is engaging to watch and knows how to teach complicated concepts in a way that makes complete sense. I feel that this is the perfect course for those that are struggling to get over the: "what am I doing in DAX" hurdle. I've done many courses on DAX, but it was never explained to me why something works and why it doesn't. I also learnt interesting new concepts that I never knew existed. Matt has been invaluable in my journey on becoming the analyst I want to be. Thank you so very much!

FAQs

I’m a beginner, is this course suitable to me?

No, this course is for those who have a minimum of 6 months' work experience with DAX. If you are a beginner, you should enroll in our "Supercharge Power BI Online" course to start your formal DAX Journey.

Why is this course a subscription?

Building skill is normally not a "learn today, I'm an expert tomorrow" process. One of the key features of this course is the ongoing access to the live Q&A sessions hosted by Matt Allington. Subscribers of this course can attend any of the live Q&A sessions for any semester during their subscription year. At the end of the first 12 months you can continue to subscribe and keep these benefits, or you can cancel your subscription and end your participation at that time. You will receive an email about 4 weeks before your subscription is renewed so that you can choose to opt out if you want to. You can also cancel the renewal for your subscription the same day you register if you prefer so that you will have just one year subscription.

Will I get videos of the live Q&A calls?

Yes, you will. Each Q&A call is recorded and the link to download the video will be sent to all the registrants whose subscription is active. You will need to download a copy of the video file and store it locally, as the recordings will not be permanently stored online. The online Video On Demand content cannot be downloaded.

If I can’t attend a Q&A call, can I still ask questions?

You can email the question at least 2 to 3 working days ahead of the Q&A call. Your question will be answered in the live Q&A call, and you will get the video recording. Or, you can ask them during the next Q&A session.

If I get distracted, can I come back and do it later?

Definitely. This is a semester-based course and your subscription gives you access to attend any of the semesters that run during your subscription. You will get the meeting invites for all semester Q&A calls and you can attend them as per your convenience. And if you cannot make it to any semester/any Q&A call, you will still receive all the video recordings that you can download and view them later. You don't have to wait for the next semester to watch the videos and do the practice - you can do that as soon as you free up your time. Then come back to the live Q&As when you are ready.

The semester has started, is it too late for me to join?

No. Each session will take nearly half a day of your time. If you missed the start by one session, then you can probably catch up. Even otherwise, you can sign up, do the work, and then simply join the live Q&A sessions next semester.

The next semester is a few weeks away, can I join anyway and get started myself with the content?

Yes, you are free to join and start at any time. You can start viewing the videos online, make a note of any questions that you have, and then when the new semester starts, you can join the live Q&A sessions.

How do I access the course materials? Are they downloadable?

The pre-recorded videos are streamed on-demand and may be watched as often as you like, however they are not downloadable for copyright control reasons. The example files and handouts for each lesson are downloadable.

Where are the pre-recorded course videos hosted?

All the videos for the course are hosted on Vimeo. Please note that some networks and countries block access to Vimeo, in which case the videos will not be watchable. You may want to double-check that you can access Vimeo before registering in the course to ensure that you will be able to see the videos. The easiest way to do this is to try to watch the first introductory lesson for this course, which is free. If that works, you will be fine. If it doesn't work at the office, you could try from your home.

How do I receive my Certificate of Completion?

After all the modules and lessons have been completed, you will be able to download the certificate of completion from the My Courses area of your Account Dashboard. Make sure you mark off each lesson and module as you go through the content in order to access the certificate.

Aside from the Q&A calls, what support is included with the course? How do I ask questions?

All users with a current course subscription receive access to our private Discussion Forum where they can ask questions related to the course materials, as well as any questions about how to apply the learnings to their own work. The forum is also intended to act as a place for students to practice by helping others with their questions. For technical issues related to the site, course access, or other questions regarding your account, please get in touch through our Contact Us page.

How do I renew my subscription?

If you subscription is set to auto-renew, our system will automatically renew your subscription for another year on your renewal date using the billing information on file. If you subscription is set to manual renewal, our system will generate a manual invoice and email it to you on the renewal date. About a month (4 weeks) before your next renewal date, you will receive an email from us reminding you that the renewal is coming up and to confirm your billing details so your access is uninterrupted.

How do I cancel my subscription?

You may cancel your subscription at any time, and you will continue to have access to all of your course materials until your expiry date. To cancel your subscription, go to the Billing page from your Account Dashboard and select the subscription to cancel from the My Subscriptions area. Once in the Subscription Details page, you can then choose to cancel your subscription from the Actions field. After your subscription expires, you will not longer have access to the course materials.
