Course Overview

Course Description

Demystifying DAX Online is a structured, online training course that will help you enhance your data modeling and DAX skills using Power BI (the skills also apply to Power Pivot and SSAS Tabular). The course is created and delivered by world-renowned DAX expert, trainer, and author of the best-selling book Supercharge Power BI, Matt Allington.

Demystifying DAX Online training is a combination of:

  • Video-based training content with examples, demos and practice exercises that will teach you the more complex DAX topics.
  • Live online Q&A calls with the instructor, Matt Allington.

The course is delivered in a semester consisting of 4 sessions (approximately 3 hour each), typically over 3 consecutive weeks.

Each of the 4 sessions consists of:

  • Viewing the online videos to learn the content for the session. This can be done few days before the live Q&A call or the day before the call or on the same day of the call, depending on your time zone and your preferred time for learning.
  • Completing any practice exercises for the session (typically less than 30 mins). Doing this gives you hands-on experience to cement your learning.
  • Attending the 45 min live Q&A call with Matt Allington to discuss the session content and ask any questions. In each call, all participants will focus on the same content that is allocated to the session. See the Course Content below to know the topics for each session.

Total hours: 13.5 hours including video, practice, and live Q&A calls.

How to Get the Maximum Benefit from the Course

It is recommended you view the videos, repeat the demos/practice exercises if you need to, then complete any homework exercises prior to attending the live Q&A calls. One of the benefits of this style of learning is you can consume the content at your own pace (faster, slower, repeat over) and still get to listen to all the discussion and questions from all the other participants during the live calls. The Q&A calls will be recorded, and the recordings will be shared with you after each call.

Demystifying DAX Online is an annual subscription product. Your registration includes the first 12 months of unlimited access to the video content, the sample materials, our premium Discussions Forum, and any of the live Q&A calls while your subscription is active. You can cancel the renewal at any time. Read more about this in the Frequently Asked Questions section below.

Who this course is for

  • Anyone with a base understanding in writing DAX and who has a minimum of 6 months’ practical experience.
  • Those who are looking to build their skills for career advancement using Power BI as their tool of choice.
  • Those who prefer the structure of guided learning to help steer them along a learning path.
  • Anyone that intuitively realises that they actually don’t understand how to get the result they need from DAX

It’s one thing to to know how to write a DAX formula. It’s a completely different level of competency to understand how to write the correct formula and understand why it works. This course addresses this and makes you understand the happening under the hood.

FAQ

I’m a beginner, is this course suitable to me?
No, this course is for those who have a minimum of 6 months' work experience with DAX. If you are a beginner, you should enroll in our "Supercharge Power BI Online" course to start your formal DAX Journey.
Why is this course a subscription?
Building skill is normally not a "learn today, I'm an expert tomorrow" process. One of the key features of this course is the ongoing access to the private support forum and the live Q&A sessions hosted by Matt Allington. Subscribers of this course can attend any of the live Q&A sessions for any semester during their subscription year. At the end of the first 12 months you can continue to subscribe and keep these benefits, or you can cancel your subscription and end your participation at that time. You will receive an email about 4 weeks before your subscription is renewed so that you can choose to opt out if you want to. You can also cancel the renewal for your subscription the same day you register if you prefer.
Will I get videos of the live Q&A calls?
Yes, you will. Each Q&A call is recorded and the link to download the video will be sent to those registered for that semester. You will need to download a copy of the video file and store it locally, as the recordings will not be permanently stored online. The online Video On Demand content cannot be downloaded.
If I can’t attend a Q&A call, can I still ask questions?
The Q&A calls are scheduled to occur immediately after you complete the session content. There will not be time to email questions in advance of the calls. If you have any questions that cannot be answered in the live Q&A calls, you can ask them in the private forum or ask them during the next Q&A session.
If I get distracted, can I come back and do it later?
Definitely. This is a semester-based course and your subscription gives you access to attend any of the semesters that run during your subscription. You will still need to register for the semesters you want to attend, but if you get distracted and “life happens” during the semester, simply contact us and book in again for a future semester during your subscription period. You don't have to wait for the next semester to watch the videos and do the practice - you can do that as soon as you free up your time. Then come back to the live Q&As when you are ready.
The semester has started, is it too late for me to join?
Yes and no. Each session will take nearly half a day of your time. If you missed the start by one session, then you can probably catch up, but it may just be better to register for the next session. If you really want to get started now, you can sign up, do the work, and then simply join the live Q&A sessions next semester.
The next semester is a few weeks away, can I join anyway and get started myself with the content?
Yes, you are free to join and start at any time. You can start viewing the videos online, and then when the new semester starts, you can join the live Q&A sessions.
How do I access the course materials? Are they downloadable?
The pre-recorded videos are streamed on-demand and may be watched as often as you like, however they are not downloadable for copyright control reasons. The example files and handouts for each lesson are downloadable.
Where are the pre-recorded course videos hosted?
All the videos for the course are hosted on Vimeo. Please note that some networks and countries block access to Vimeo, in which case the videos will not be watchable. You may want to double-check that you can access Vimeo before registering in the course to ensure that you will be able to see the videos. The easiest way to do this is to try to watch the first introductory lesson for this course, which is free. If that works, you will be fine. If it doesn't work at the office, you could try from your home.
How do I receive my Certificate of Completion?
After all the modules and lessons have been completed, you will be able to download the certificate of completion from the My Courses area of your Account Dashboard. Make sure you mark off each lesson and module as you go through the content in order to access the certificate.
Aside from the Q&A calls, what support is included with the course? How do I ask questions?
All users with a current course subscription receive access to our private Discussion Forum where they can ask questions related to the course materials, as well as any questions about how to apply the learnings to their own work. The forum is also intended to act as a place for students to practice by helping others with their questions. For technical issues related to the site, course access, or other questions regarding your account, please get in touch through our Contact Us page.
How do I renew my subscription?
Our system will automatically renew your subscription for another year on your expiry date using the billing information on file (unless you have opted out - see below). About a month (4 weeks) before your current expiry date, you will receive an email from us reminding you that the renewal is coming up. You can always choose to cancel at that time.
How do I cancel my subscription?
You may cancel your subscription renewal at any time - you will continue to have access to all the course materials until the expiry date of your active subscription. To cancel your subscription, go to the Subscriptions of your Account Dashboard and select the subscription to the product you wish to cancel. After your subscription expires, you will no longer have access to the course materials. If you know in advance that you don't want to renew, you can cancel the auto renewal at any time (including as soon as you register, if you like).
What payment methods do you accept? What currency is used?
We accept credit card payments through our secure online payment portal, Stripe. If you would like to discuss other payment options, please get in touch through our Contact Us page. All transactions are charged in US Dollars.
What is your refund policy for this course?
We think you will love our training, however, if you are unsatisfied with the training for any reason, we offer a 14-day 100% money-back guarantee, as long as you have completed less than 25% of the course (for this course that means that you must not have commenced Session 2+). All we ask in return is that you tell us why you were unsatisfied with the training so we can learn and make it even better. We do not offer refunds if you have completed over 25% of the course and/or it is more than 14 days after the purchase date.

I would like to give the ‘Demystifying DAX’ course a 10 out of 10 rating. Matt Allington presents the topics in a clear and consise way, and I have really gotten a better understanding of the key concepts in Power Bi in general and of DAX specifically. I would really recommend this course.

Of all the Online courses I’ve done this is by far THE best!! Matt is engaging to watch and knows how to teach complicated concepts in a way that makes complete sense. I was struggling to write good DAX and never knew why sometimes my DAX worked and why sometimes it didn’t. I feel that this is the perfect course for those that are struggling to get over the : “what am I doing in DAX” hurdle. I’ve done many courses on DAX, but it was never explained to me why something works and why it doesn’t. I also learnt interesting new concepts that I never knew existed before like “DAX as a query Language”. Matt has been invaluable in my journey on becoming the analyst I want to be. Thank you so very much!

I found this course to be delivered very clearly and concisely on topics that I didn’t even realise were as confused in my head as they were. Matt takes you on the journey with the easy to follow method of teaching he seems to have. I love the online format followed by the Q&A sessions as you can make sure you fit this blocks of learnings around your schedule. Pause, go back and to then have 12 months to revisit again after more practice. I’m addicted to Power BI learning thanks to these courses.

I’m so glad I took this course. There is so much free content on Power BI but this course actually delivers on its promises in a clear and concise way. It is worth every penny. Matt has great knowledge and experience but it is his skill as a trainer that makes this course stand out. Difficult concepts are explained and demonstrated in a way that shows an understanding of the common problems encountered by so many Power BI users. I’m actually looking forward to writing some DAX today!

  6. Todd Singer (verified owner)

This course is great if you have had a bit of experience in DAX but are still struggling with some concepts or trying to figure out why the numbers you are getting in a matrix don’t look right. It really helped me better understand row context, filter context, and the difference between SUM and SUMX. There are also great tips on writing more efficient DAX code and troubleshooting Measures that are taking a long time to process. Highly recommend this course if you’ve been writing DAX for about 6-12 months already.

  7. Scott Chambers (verified owner)

A course for people that want to accelerate their understanding and effectiveness within DAX and Power BI. Matt takes you behind the screen and builds your understanding of “what is happening”. Lots of tips and tricks to unlock all the road blocks and frustrations you may have with DAX/Power BI.

  8. Gerard Bennett (verified owner)

There are plenty of courses & resources on DAX Formula but this course explains why & how it works under the hood. A great choice if you want to improve your skills at writing DAX.

  9. Cristian (verified owner)

This is THE Course one should take if not a complete beginner anymore.

The course is a journey through different intermediate/advanced topics and really tricky concepts with very clear explanations on the “theory” behind it, backed up by hands-on examples, providing answers on WHY DAX is behaving as it does and HOW should one model the data so DAX expressions are easier to write to get valuable insights.
I really liked the structure of the course and how it started, revisiting DAX Basics, and then, moving through different topics so that one can get a better understanding on how and why DAX works as it does.

Matt’s teaching experience is fantastic and a lot of the concepts you’ve heard about (or not yet 😊) are detailed in the course in a manner that ANYONE can understand them clearly and leverage them in the day-to-day work with Power BI.

I totally recommend the course to anyone with some DAX experience.
