I liked the clear and understandable way in which even complex DAX concepts are laid out and explained. I love the course and keep returning to review it whenever I need to brush up and design new measures in my reports. Matt is an awesome instructor!

Course Description
Demystifying DAX Online is a structured training course that will help you enhance your data modeling and DAX skills using Power BI. (The skills also apply to Power Pivot and SSAS Tabular.) It’s one thing to know how to write a DAX formula. It’s a completely different level of competency to understand how to write the correct formula and understand why it works. This course addresses this, so you understand what is happening under the hood.
This advanced course is created and delivered by world-renowned DAX expert, trainer, and author of the best-selling book Supercharge Power BI, Matt Allington. It is a combination of:
- Video-based training content with examples, demos and practice exercises that will teach you the more complex DAX topics.
- Live online Q&A calls with the instructor, Matt Allington.
Demystifying DAX Online is delivered in a semester consisting of 4 sessions (approximately 3 hour each), typically over 2 consecutive weeks. Each of the 4 sessions consists of:
- Viewing the online videos to learn the content for the session. This can be done few days before the live Q&A call or the day before the call or on the same day of the call, depending on your time zone and your preferred time for learning.
- Completing any practice exercises for the session (typically less than 30 mins). Doing this gives you hands-on experience to cement your learning.
- Attending the 45 min live Q&A call with Matt Allington to discuss the session content and ask any questions. In each call, all participants will focus on the same content that is allocated to the session. See below for the topics covered in each session.
Total hours: 13.5 hours including video, practice, and live Q&A calls.
Who this course is for?
- Anyone with a base understanding in writing DAX and who has a minimum of 6 months’ practical experience.
- Those who are looking to build their skills for career advancement using Power BI as their tool of choice.
- Those who prefer the structure of guided learning to help steer them along a learning path.
- Anyone that intuitively realises that they actually don’t understand how to get the result they need from DAX.

Sessions and Topics
Course Semesters
There will be typically 4 to 5 semesters scheduled in a year.
Each semester is scheduled over three weeks:
- One Onboarding Week
- Two Semester Weeks
Onboarding Week
- View the onboarding video to understand the course structure in detail and how to complete the learning.
- View the Introduction video.
- View the DAX Basics video as a quick refresher. You should also brush up on these skills too, if needed.
- Update your diary to lock in the time when you will do the work for each session during the semester week.
Semester Weeks
Within the time window you have set for yourself to work on each session, you will need to:
- View the videos of the session as given in the Sessions and Topics section above.
- Complete the practice exercises, if any.
- Complete the homework exercises, if any.
- Prepare your questions for the Q&A call related to the session.
You will then attend the live online Q&A call of the session at the scheduled time.
Live Online Q&A Calls
The live online Q&A calls will be held twice a week in Week 1 and Week 2 at 7:00 AM (local time in Sydney, Australia). You will be sent the meeting invite for the calls 2 weeks prior to the start of the next semester.
There is often some structured homework for each session that you may complete at your own pace, based on your schedule and time preferences. We recommend that you complete this work before the call and we can discuss your solution together. If you cannot complete the homework, you can still attend the call to listen to the discussions and ask any questions.
The call times for the upcoming semester are given below based on various time zones. If your time zone is not shown below, please convert to your time zone based on the time in Sydney, Australia (AEST).
Note: Please be aware of the multiple time differences due to the beginning and ending of Daylight Savings Time around the world.

Supporting Content
Student Guide (PDF format)
- A consolidation of the hands-on and homework exercises given in each of the lessons. You can use this to easily keep track of the practice exercises for each session.
- A list of topics covered in each of the videos with timestamps. You can now easily search this PDF list for a specific topic that you are looking for, to quickly locate which video covers that topic.
You can use this list of topics in conjunction with the Chapters feature that is available in each lesson video (see below for more details).
Edited Subtitles in English for all Lesson Videos
English captions/subtitles are provided for all the videos in the course. The editing has been done by our Power BI team and are not auto-generated, so we think you may find them useful.
Captions may be turned on for an individual lesson by clicking on the CC icon in the right corner of the video control bar (located at the bottom of the lesson player) and selecting “English”.
Next to the CC icon you can find the transcript icon, and clicking it displays the transcript next to the video.
Chapters and Timestamps in all Lesson Videos
Chapters (i.e. topics covered in the video) and timestamps are provided for all the videos in the course.
The Chapters icon is found next to the Settings icon. When you click it, a list of chapters is displayed. You can click on any of the chapters and video starts playing at the timestamp for the topic.
This feature is useful for later reference when you want to review any specific topic. It can be used in conjunction with the Student Guide provided (see above), wherein all the topics covered are listed by lesson.
How to Get the Maximum Benefit from the Course
It is recommended you view the videos, repeat the demos/practice exercises if you need to, and then complete any homework exercises prior to attending the live Q&A calls.
One of the benefits of this style of learning is you can consume the content at your own pace (faster, slower, repeat over) and still get to listen to all the discussion and questions from all the other participants during the live calls.
The Q&A calls will be recorded, and the recordings will be shared with you after each call. You can download the videos and keep them for your later reference.
